A perfect example of a famous couple that made things work for a very long time, Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres first fell for each other in 2004 and they remain together to this very day.

As most people already know, Portia de Rossi married Ellen DeGeneres in 2008. On the other hand, many of Portia’s fans are unaware of the fact that she was married to a man named Mel Metcalfe III from 1996 until 1999. Finding Bliss

An extremely talented performer, Portia de Rossi rose to international fame as one of the stars of the highly acclaimed show Arrested Development. Of course, despite de Rossi’s many accomplishments, her spouse Ellen DeGeneres is even more famous due to her highly successful run as a daytime talk show.

Given the fact that Ellen and Portia are both famous, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that their relationship has been under a lot of scrutinies over the years. More than that, the couple has been dogged by imminent divorce rumors for many years. However, to date, all of that conjecture has gone nowhere as the pair remain together and they both talk about what makes their relationship work.

Portia’s First Marriage Went Very Wrong

Long before Portia de Rossi met and fell in love with Ellen DeGeneres, she walked down the aisle with a man named Mel Metcalfe III. A relationship that wasn’t meant to last, in an ideal world, Portia and Mel would have parted amicably and maybe even still be friends to this day. Unfortunately for de Rossi, that is far from the case as her first marriage came to a bitter end, to say the least.

In 2010, Portia de Rossi released a memoir titled “Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain”. In her book, Portia was very open about her life including the nature of her former marriage and how it came to a brutal end. In the book, Portia revealed that when her brother got married, he and his new wife “moved into an apartment in the same Melrose Place-style complex that was home to me and Mel”. Of course, it was natural for the two couples to spend lots of time together.

Unfortunately, for Portia and her brother, she revealed in her book that their spouses soon betrayed them and ran off together. “When my husband left me, my brother moved into my place… My husband ran off with his wife, so we kept each other company and we liked to go out for margaritas and Mexican food to commiserate.”
